My wife Kerry (a great bird spotter) and I are originally from NSW but have resided in Hobart since 2001, where we are now retired.  My first degree is in Forest Science (ANU) and I also have a Master’s degree (by research) in Natural Resources (UNE).  The post-graduate degree had a wildlife management focus.  I have worked in forest management and forest research in NSW, Tasmania, New Zealand, Nepal (twice), Bhutan and Vietnam, and have published research in both national and international scientific journals and conference proceedings.  Up until a few ago I was chairman of the Forest Practices Advisory Council in Tasmania.  I was formerly a member of the Regent Honeyeater Recovery Team and the Wedge-tailed Eagle Recovery Team (Tas).  For the last ten years I have been involved in environmental audits of forest practices in Victoria.

My interest in birds has been lifelong, starting with keeping and breeding Australian finches as a boy through to assisting with bird surveys for environmental assessments and now that we have more time we are trying to see and photograph as many of Australia’s beautiful birds as possible.  Photography has been a growing passion, particularly over the last 5 years.  I do a lot of landscape photography on my travels chasing but not harassing birds.  In the last 12 month I have learnt the value of shooting in raw and I’m still working on mastering the post-processing software.

I am achievement motivated and bring to the committee strong planning and managerial skills and the desire to be part of a cohesive team.
