Mark 300wideI’m a retired engineer, keen bush walker and bird photographer.  Growing up in New Zealand and spending my youth in the bush and mountains I came to appreciate the few birds of that country.  On arriving in Western Australia in the 1970s, I found myself on Barrow Island amongst small wrens, ospreys and white-bellied sea eagles. My education in Australian birds had just begun.

Living in Perth my interest in backyard birds grew and when the Carnaby’s and Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos began to appear in the metropolitan area around ten years ago I soon found it was due to the destruction of their natural habitat by land clearing and other development activities under the approval of successive governments.

I have always enjoyed photography and bought a better camera and zoom lens four years ago, which soon showed me how much there is to learn and that a single lifetime may not be long enough.  I recently upgraded to the next model, with a vastly improved body and a fast prime telephoto, so with many good locations so close to home, including the backyard and local parks, there is never any doubt about how to spend spare time.  I’ve found that getting up early is now even more rewarding.

Membership of the BLP has given, and continues to give me great support in my photography through its regular competitions and membership network contacts.  I want to actively support the organisation and firmly believe that committee work is one way to do that.  The skills I bring are reliability, attention to detail, years of past industry committee membership and some photography proficiency as evidenced by my competition entries nationally, and in WA.
