Rob Parker

I started my birding back in the 1970s as a "holiday bird watcher", often around the Gippsland Lakes or the NSW south coast.  No bird photography then, only the occasional holiday shots with a Pentax Me 35mm film camera.  It wasn't until digital SLR cameras became available that I ventured into bird photography, starting with a Canon EOS 350D and Canon 75-300mm lens around 2004.  In November 2006, I attended a BOCA weekend photography course organised by Bob Young, at Little Desert - and then I was hooked.  Soon after came a 150-500mm Sigma lens.  In 2008 I was one of the foundation members of PhotoBOCA (which became BirdLife Photography in 2012), and I became a committee member in May 2010; I have remained a committee member since then.  And my gear these days is a Canon 7D MkII, Canon 100-400mm MkII lens, and 1.4x MkIII teleconvertor.

Most of my professional career was as a chemist, in Weapons Systems Division of the Defence Science & Technology Organisation; I retired as a Senior Research Scientist in 1998.  Subsequently, I spent a number of years developing MS Access database applications as a contractor to DSTO.  These days I'm mainly occupied with running the BLP website and editing our Newsletter - but I do manage to get in some bird photography, and also an annual overseas trip, some exotic (Antarctica, South America, Svalbard and still on the bucket-list, the Galapagos), and some simply touristing.
