The Western Treatment Plant (WTP) is the birding hotspot of Victoria. It is a Ramsar site and an Important Bird Area located just 25 km from Geelong at Werribee. It is the main sewage treatment facility for Melbourne and is a locked property owned by Melbourne Water. Its 10,500 hectares include farmland, sewage settling ponds of various sizes and depths, conservation ponds, river frontage, and a long foreshore on Port Phillip Bay with sand and mud flats, lagoons, rocky outcrops and outlet drains.

During DPITB in Geelong we plan to offer half- and full-day visits on Friday 10 March and Monday 13 March.
Half-day 8.00 – 12.30; 1.00 – 5.30
Full-day 8.30 – 5.00

Bird-watching access to WTP is controlled by permit with permit-holders issued with gate keys. We plan to call on permit-holders to volunteer to host visitors during these outings.
Numbers will be limited by the number of permit-holders who volunteer their services. We will call for expressions of interest later in the year – both from those who would like to take this great opportunity to visit and those willing to be your hosts. Priority will be given to interstate bird photographers.

If you are planning now for your visit to Geelong be sure to include an extra day for a trip to the Western Treatment Plant.
