Hi All, out of interest I was wondering if the committee has considered inclusion of a breakdown of each species into subspecies where relevant. We now have with the BirdLife 'Working List of Australian Birds v2" a complete comprehensive list of common names for all subspecies. I noticed at the conference that Cam stated the libraries don't really need another 50 images of Superb Fairy-wrens (as an example) but they could possibly break these bulging numbers down into 6 different subspecies. There are 10 subspecies of White-browed Scrubwrens as another example.
Some can be easily identified on morphological differences eg Northern and Southern Sooty Oystercatchers, Northern and Southern Masked Lapwings; while others are differentiated by range eg Tasmanian and Mainland Wedge-tailed Eagles.
I have no doubt that such an inclusion might create an enormous nightmare for the moderators. Maybe even an encouragement to enter the subspecies in the comments section might be a start.
Thanks for all your work

Good point Mark. I would certainly agree that when members can confidently identify a subspecies they be encouraged to do so in the comments field. I have been doing this for some time now with a view to helping the ID Gallery specialists. I expect the ID Gallery, when it is launched, will include a selection of images of different subspecies, I certainly hope so.
Cheers, Ian

Allowing/providing for submission of images at sub-species level is well beyond what we are capable of doing at present. Indeed, even coping with changes in taxonomy when species lists are updated in a substantial effort. Ian has noted that he (and others) provide such information, if possible, in the comments field, and we'll certainly use that in the forthcoming ID Gallery. We encourage all members to keep this in mind when submitting images to our galleries.

For members who want to add a subspecies name to an existing uploaded image, I assume, click on, my photos, manage my photos, edit. Then add subspecies name to comments field.
Correct?
Cheers Peter.

Exactly right. Changing data will cause the image to become unpublished it, but a moderator will re-publish it. We do that so that someone doesn't (probably inadvertently - it can be done by clicking on a name in the species list) amend the species to something incorrect.

Thanks Rob
I'll grab my field guide and amend the appropriate images, making the moderator's job a little easier, if any are required for the id gallery.
Cheers Peter.
