Splits are a big issue when we get an updated taxonomy from BirdLife.
If there is a lump (e.g. the recent lump of Eastern and Western Ground Parrots into Ground Parrot) all of the images of the constituent species can be automatically re-assigned to the new species and no human intervention is required.
However if a species is split (e.g. the recent split of Gull-billed Tern into Common and Australian) no automation is possible - photos of the split species are re-assigned to (in this case) "Gull-billed Tern complex" and it is then up to the photographer or a moderator to re-assign the image to one of the new species. Since splits occur when one (or more) subspecies are "promoted" into a new species if the subspecies is (correctly) identified for the original image it makes the job of the moderator easier.
