After nine years in the making, the long-awaited Australian Bird Guide by Peter Menkhorst, Danny Rogers and Rohan Clarke with illustrations by Jeff Davies, Peter Marsack and Kim Franklin has been published by CSIRO Publishing. This is an outstanding field guide the like of which we have never seen before. It is up-to-date and sets new standards of description for 936 Australian bird species with about 4700 carefully crafted illustrations. Highly recommended, price about $50.

Hi Ian
I've been waiting for this book to be published, I've had it on order at my local book store for a couple of weeks, really lovely group of Ladies and they pre-ordered it for me so that the $10 went to BLA.

There are reports that some pages of illustrations in some copies of the book have a faded, washed-out appearance. I suggest buyers carefully check their copies for this printing fault and ask for a replacement copy if you have a defective copy.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the warning, mine hasn't arrived yet.
For those that have a copy, can you tell me as to whether the images are photographs or drawings?
I forked out over $180 for The Australian Grass finches book and it is all drawings and no pictures to show the brilliant colors of these beautiful birds. Although it is a very beautiful and large book, I have to say I'm a little disappointed at the lack of photos. . .

Hi Bruce,
The illustrations are all reproduced from watercolours, no photographs. This is still regarded as the best method for illustrating bird ID points. If you intend to use the book for bird ID you will not be disappointed.
