This bird was photographed near Tenterfield NSW. Initially I thought it was a Grey Shrikethrush but it was a little bit small and the speckled back did not fit. More experienced birdos in my group have reviewed the photo and think it is a juvenile Jacky Winter.

It looks more like a Grey Shrike-thrush to me. Size is important- GST is nearly twice as big as Jacky Winter. Do you know how big the post is, it would give a scale.
The speckled back could be reflections on the feather tips, it is a fairly reflective image.

Hi Robert, you are correct! its a1st year Gst. Graham Cam, Con Boekel and Rob Parker have identified it as a first year Grey Shrike-thrush. I was greatful to Con for provided this information to assist with the ID
"Jizz is G S-t.

1. Beak is robust, more rounded and more blunt as opposed to fairly thin, more straight and more needle-pointed = G S-t

2. Posture is horizontal rather than upright = more likely a G S-t

3. Body is plump rather than fine = G S-t

4. Spurious reason: going on the fence post and rusty wire, probably hanging around farm building, Housewife's Friend, old common name for G S - t.

5. Lack of white edge to wing = G S-t.

6. White lores rather than white or buff eyestripe over black/dark grey lores = G S-t."

Thanks for responding Robert. I'm new to using forums and perhaps I should have taked down the enquiry once I had the answer
