  • Lesser Frigatebird at Kalbarri reported by James Bailey (on behalf of Lyn Cook) on 14-06-2018
This is slightly late news but I thought it would be worth sharing anyway. Lyn sent us this image through the website QuestaGame (a citizen science site for recording wildlife sightings) and I found it yesterday in the list. As far as I can tell, this is a lesser frigatebird, and quite a southern record for any frigatebird in WA. I see no west coast records on eBird at all for any of the 3 species in the Pacific. The bird seems to be between 3 and 4 years of age. The head is white with a very broad black neck collar, to the extent that the white underparts are almost missing (perhaps changing to more adult plumage)? The ID is not confirmed as I'm not properly familiar with the frigatebirds. The photo is credited to Lyn Cook. I have attached my email address for further discussion.
