CommentA resubmission to replace an earlier post, with more open cropping and improved processing. This version has less digital noise and better sharpening, and selective blur was applied to parts of the background to subdue distracting details. This is still quite a small crop from the original frame and fine detail doesn't stand up to pixel peeping, but I've kept the revised image as I think it's a good depiction of the species characteristics.
As often happens in Tasmania, a powerful wind had arisen very quickly and caught out this unfortunate bird, grounded and hanging on for dear life to an old gate surrounded by open paddocks. Under the circumstances I could have approached closer despite the open surroundings, but I didn't want to stress the bird further so I captured a frame that I knew I'd have to crop, then retreated. At least I was able to manoeuvre to get an eye highlight!
