We have had a lot of these around our block this year. I managed to catch this one vocalising.

Glenn Pure	2017-08-20 10:31:42	Matt, you've captured some nice action here. The lighting adjustments look fine especially given the harsh direct sunlight. The shot has a few problems though that probably render it unrecoverable. First and critically, focus on the bird is soft. It appears the focus lock has been a bit behind the bird based on looking at the branch it is sitting on. To fix this, you need to focus on the bird's head and if you are using a half-pressed shutter button for focus lock, keep your finger half pressed while you recompose. This assumes you are using centre point single shot focus which I'd recommend in this situation. The second issue is the rather thick branch obscuring part of the bird and dominating the image. While I'm all for environment shots, I think you are better off trying for another opportunity, especially as you have a few of these birds around. One of the best things you can do is practice by taking lots of shots and work hard on being in control of the camera, not the other way around. I still get caught out plenty of times on the latter, much to my annoyance!
Matt Oliver	2017-08-21 18:54:58	--Thanks Glenn. the branch in front of the bird was blurred in LR to try to make it less obvious - guess that was a mistake, I should have shifted position to try to make more a gap between the branch and the bird. Looking at the camera the centre of focus was actually on the wing so I do need to concentrate more on keeping it on the eye.

Glenn Pure	2017-08-22 08:41:52	Hi Matt, the blur on the foreground branch is actually good, not a negative but it doesn't take away from the fact that the branch dominates the image. That was my point so sorry if I didn't make that clear. As for focus point, not sure if you are going from memory here or looking at the data on focus point in your RAW file. The latter can be misleading as it simply shows which point was used when focus was locked. You can recompose a shot (or slightly move the camera) after focus is locked and get a misleading idea of where the lock actually occurred on the subject. I say this because the wing looks a bit soft too. One question: are you applying any sharpening after you downsize your image in preparation for uploading to BLP. This is quite important and can significantly detract from image sharpness.
