Wingspan = 80 - 90cm
Conservation status (BWL) = Least Concern

This bird is technically a Northern Cape Petrel because of the amount of white on the upperwing and back. The Cape Petrel has two (2) races - the darker-backed being the Northern Cape Petrel and the lighter nominate race, the Southern Cape Petrel. Both the Cape and Northern Cape have been accepted as correct answers.

Some identifying features are:

- Chequered upperwings with broad white patches at bases of primary and secondary feathers
- Underwing mostly white with dark margins
- Rump white, chequered brown to black
