CommentCollecting nesting material. A note on ethical photography: this bird alit a relatively short distance away enabling some good portraits. Uncharacteristically for a pardalote, it seemed in no hurry to move, and it became clear that its prospective (or perhaps active) nest site was close nearby and it was not going to attend it until I moved off. I therefore did so rather than loiter for more photos even though the opportunity was good. As photographers it is important to be aware of normal bird behaviour and to withdraw if we see evidence that our presence is disturbing it, particularly in breeding season.
I've often wondered whether the particular pattern of spots on the head can identify an individual in this species?
