CommentPrions are by far the most challenging birds to photograph and ID on the Southern Ocean. They are small, fast and are pale-blue against a blue sea. There are about 8 spp with often only minute variations between them and in some cases absolute identification can only be made by in-hand examination.
Antarctic Prions were the most common of the Prions that we observed sometimes occurring in massive flocks of 100's of birds.Their black tail band is intermediate in width b/n the broad Fairy Prion and the narrower Slender-billed Prion. Like the Slender-billed they have a broad grey 1/2 neck collar but have a darker 'M' over upperwing and back and a narrower supercillium that generally doesn't join the white face
