Hi. This is a very minor point but wondering if it happens to anyone else? I went to check on the two photos I entered into the last competition (best of 2020) and only one of them was showing. This is the second time that one of the photos I have entered into a competition has disappeared after the comp has closed. I had previously submitted the same photo into the Main Library and it was accepted and is still there. So I am assuming that it wasn't to do with the photo quality. Any explanations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Philip. The most likely thing that has happened here is that the photo submitted to the competition was assessed somewhat differently to the one submitted to our general gallery (New Images/Main Library). Aside from the fact that assessment involves a some subjectivity and will vary between moderators, it's also possible that being a competition entry, it may have been assessed against a higher standard although I'm not a competition gallery moderator so can't comment further than that. If a photo submitted to BLP is assessed by a moderator as below the standard we'd want for longer term retention, it will be automatically removed after 30 days. In your instance, I think it's most likely the photo you submitted to New images was assessed as suitable for longer term retention but that wasn't the case for the copy submitted to the competition gallery. While you may already know the following, it's worth mentioning that sometimes a moderator will reject a photo outright if it's quality is too far below the standards we have for retention in which case an email will go to the photographer. But we try to provide opportunities for our members work to be seen, even if we think it isn't always suitable for longer term retention in our image library. Personally I do this more often for newer members who are still developing their skills so they get an opportunity for their work to be seen.

Thanks Glen. I thought that might be the case but it would be good to know the reason. However I suspect that may be too much work depending on the volume of rejections. As it was a competition entry, and even got some votes, I would have thought it could have stayed simply as a record of entry. I would think it matters less in competition entries than it does in maintaining the quality of images in the main libraries, but just my opinion :)

In terms of why it was not rated for longer term retention in the competition gallery, I can't say but if you post the shot in question to the Critique Gallery, you might get some ideas of what the issues are.

Or if you just send it to me or one of the other moderators, I'd be happy to provide some comments privately if you don't want to use the 'public' Critique gallery.
