CommentThis was the most common species of birds of prey seen on a recent cruise around the Kimberley coast. A number of nests were also seen quite low in the mangroves fringing creeks and inlets. This particular bird provided many photo opportunities as it was being fed by the captain of our boat. Apparently, this bird and its partner started off by retrieving prawn scraps tossed overboard by the crew a year or so back. Out of interest the crew wondered if it would take meat offered to it - which it did. Now the bird turns up regularly when the boat pulls into its creek, even after 5 months of absence during the wet season. The captain places a small piece of steak on a pencil and holds it in his hand. The bird flys by and snatches it off the upheld pencil. The bird's partner will take food thrown in the air. This enabled good chances for flight shots. However, the sun was getting low and the bird in shadow meaning I had to push my luck with lower shutter speed and higher ISO than I'd prefer. For this shot, the head was a little soft so I had to apply some localised unsharp mask in an attempt to recover.
EquipmentCanon 80D with EF 100-400mm Mark 2, handheld at 400mm
1/800 sec, f7.1, ISO 2000.
Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting and perform noise reduction. A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements v9) where further noise reduction was applied to the main subject using Neat Image plugin for PSE. The background was noise reduced and the main subject sharpened after resizing for upload.
