CommentOur local flock of Pied Currawongs is usually seen high in the trees of Coburg Lake Reserve incessantly keeping in touch with each other through their strange mewling calls. As Judith Wright recalls “But I remember long ago/(a child beside the seldom sea)/the currawongs as wild as night/quarrelling, talking, crying so” (Birds, National Library of Australia). This one, unusually, was on its own, perched head-height on a branch just below a large cobweb, picked out by the morning dew. The characteristic pied plumage and yellow eye are very evident.
