CommentIt’s quite unusual for the Oriental Pratincole to be found on the dried-out mudflats of any freshwater lake in Perth. Only rarely do these birds venture this far south. Though not particularly shy and in time allowing me as close as 7-8 m, it was difficult to separate it from the hazy background and make it stand out from the drying mud of Thomson’s Lake, the colour of which offered the bird good camouflage. The heat shimmer of a hot and sunny afternoon further made it difficult to get a good capture. In 2020, already by mid December, this Ramsar Convention lake had hardly any water left in it, but had turned into a large, smelly cake of slippery mud
