To get this image I had gone to Peel Harvey Estuary and walked out to the water’s edge at low tide, before dawn. Lying prostrate covered by camouflage netting on a yoga mattress, briefly after dawn this plover flew in and began foraging quite close to me. As the rising sun caught the little bird I took a number of captures, lens handheld, this image being the better one. The bird was foraging by submerging its head to just above the eye, and this capture shows it pulling its head back from the water; the protective nictitating membrane is still partly visible in the rear corner of the eye. Locality of capture: Coodanup Foreshore Reserve (GPS) at Nairns, WA. Status (2016): Least Concern
EquipmentNikon D850 with GPS mounted – DX Mode
Nikkor AF-S 500mm f4G ED VR lens + TC-14E MkIII = 700mm focal length
Technique: Camera rig support: Gitzo GT3543XLS Tripod, Dietmar Nill gimbal tripod head; lying on mudflats, camera handheld
Exposure Mode: MANUAL 1/2500 sec at f5; ISO-250. Metering Mode: Center-Weighted; Focus Mode: AF-C Low & AF Area Mode: Dynamic, 9 points.
Post Processing: Nikon ViewNX-i for viewing and selecting files; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for resizing and cropping to 138% followed by conversion to Tif 16-bits, selective sharpening and general post-processing inclusive of removal of halos; Topaz Pro plug-in DeNoise was used for mild blanket sharpening and moderate noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for species distribution confirmation, supplementary data and colour checks
