CommentAnother shot from WTP in failing light. Its a relatively heavy crop, 25% of the original. I was driving towards the signpost and snapping one handed out of the driver's window. I crept towards the post as slowly as I could but predictably the bird flew away before I could get much closer.

I could have dropped the shutter speed a little and the ISO with it, but I don't think that would have been enough to really compensate for the issues of distance.

I'm struggling with the sharpness here and I think its mainly because of the heavy crop. It also needed about 1 stop of exposure lift including some fiddling with the selective tones, all global. I've locally increased the sharpness and micro-contrast on the main body but it quickly shows artefacts. The only gobal sharpening I've used is the recommended level of Photolab lens sharpness ie deconvolution based not Unsharp. I can already see a few haloes on the sharp edges so I wasn't game to turn that up. It was exported using the Bicubic Sharpen option (no settings to configure). Any better suggestions?

As for the composition its fairly classic. There were no options with the background. I have acres of plain blue sky around the bird so I could reframe in many ways. I settled on the negative space to the LHS to follow the gaze, but with an escape route to the right. Indeed the bird quickly flew off to the RHS. I tend to check my composition by staring at it with unfocussed eyes just to get the broad impression and of the various variants I tried this seemed the most satisfying. You may disagree.

All comments welcome.
