CommentThis is one of six species of Treecreeper endemic to Australia and can be a bit of a challenge to separate from some of the other species of Treecreeper. I'll exclude the obviously different Treecreepers from the rest of this discussion.

The first thing is to check out the eyebrows or lack of them. The Red-browed Treecreeper's eyebrow is red all the way from lores to behind the eye - except when juvenile, so care needed there. The male White-browed Treecreeper has an all white eyebrow so, easy to exclude. However, the female has a bit of chestnut just above the eyebrow and it is important not to mistake that as a 'buff eyebrow'. That leaves the eyebrow of the Brown Treecreeper which is broad and buff coloured.
Next thing to do is to check the upper breast marks. Note that the White-browed male lacks them, the female White-browed has brown stripes, the male Brown has dark grey markings and the female Brown has brown markings. Some of these markings are hard to spot in real life so care is needed when using these characters.
A useful behavioural cue is that Brown Treecreepers spend more time on the ground and fallen branches than other Treecreepers.
