Comment | The Australian White Ibis is a close relative to the African Sacred, which was mentioned by Caesar, when his armies occupied Alexandria: He sought permission from Cleopatra to kill the birds to be used as food for his troops, as the ibis were fouling the streets leaving an odour unfit for Roman noses. As the birds were indeed sacred, the answer was a blunt ‘no!’ The Australian White Ibis has also benefited from our urban environments, expanding its territory and frequently building up huge numbers around rubbish tips, just as they can be seen in any park, foraging on the manicured lawns. They eat grasshoppers, snails, mussels, aquatic worms and marron as well as human scraps. Prior to around 1990 I did not then see it that often 30 km from the Perth CBD, but it has since become abundant also in my suburb, where it frequents any sports oval and the few remaining wet patches, such as drainage ditches as well as wet strips along rivers and creeks.
