CommentThe sociable Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater has a loud and melodic call, and if encountered in a flock, you are left in no doubt that you have found something that might be worth further investigation. It likes to forage high up in blossoming trees, but may go to ground to find food such as small reptiles. Insects are often caught in the air in an acrobatic manner, and it will also take larvae and even young birds. While feeding on nectar, the bird will glean insects from twigs and grab any spider encountered. The species is an aggressive one and will defend a source of food, such as a eucalypt in blossom. In fact, in behaviour the species is very much like a smaller and social version of the wattlebirds. Endemic to Australia and a bird of many different habitats, it is common over most of Australia, barring the tropical North, the deep Southwest and Tasmania. Interestingly, it is also absent from most of the Eastern coastline. Lake Ninan. Status: Least Concern
