CommentThe Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, Ptilotula ornata, is endemic to Australia and found in wooded areas of the southern parts of Australia, occurring in NSW, VIC, SA and WA predominantly in mallee shrub, but also found in the wetter eucalypt woodlands of WA, as is the case here. This bird in non-breeding plumage, indicated by the partly yellow bill and only being slightly streaked on the breast, was part of a troop of 6 that constantly fought a battle for territory around a tiny patch of flowering bushes with a group of New Holland Honey-eaters. This battle the Yellow-plumed troop habitually lost, but as soon as the New Holland Honeyeaters looked away, they were back! The species is quite sedentary, moving with available food sources and forming territories in optimum habitat. It is noted that by 2020 the Yellow-plumed Honeyeater is mostly placed in the genus ‘Ptilotula’, moving it from ‘Lichenostomus’ following molecular analysis promulgated in 2011. Victoria Dam; GPS.
