Comment“Glory be to god for dappled things…All things counter, original, spare, strange: Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)...whose beauty is past change”. Gerard Manley Hopkins was thinking about finches wings but if had lived in Australia he would certainly have written a paean to the Spotted Pardalote, our very original, fickle and befreckled tiniest of birds, sometimes seen dancing around the fringes of eucalypts in search of lerp and manna. This Pardalotus punctatus was one of a small flock discovered in the northwest corner of Royal Park. Its yellow throat and pronounced white spots on the head indicate a male. The image conveys its tiny size in relation to the surrounding gum leaves and the extraordinary beauty of its plumage. Heart-stopping indeed!
