| Comment | (Image is that of the nominate species Gerygone fusca of south-west WA). The agile and extremely whimsical little Western Gerygone is not an easy bird to photograph in my view. Just as you think that you’ve got in nailed and are about to press the shutter release, it is gone, leaving one to believe that its common name has something to do with that trait! However, the word ‘gerygone’ is from the Greek meaning ‘echoes of a child’, referring to the song of the species. I must have 100’s of photos of this tiny erratic bird showing the tail feathers only. On this occasion, while standing in the shadow of a Jarrah eucalupt waiting for something to happen and having pre-focused on the branches of a dead tree, suddenly this bird appeared out of nowhere and perched about 3½ m up, a bit too high up for the perfect capture. Still, I immediately pressed the shutter and rattled off a dozen shots, while the bird unfortunately seemed to be watching the skies rather than me. After about 5 seconds the gerygone was obviously satisfied that nothing dangerous was lurking in the skies, and it went on its merry way quick as a flash. | ||||||||||||||||||
