CommentThe Australian Raven is one bird species, which has benefited from man’s urbanized societies. It has become more numerous in the cities in recent decades, and few are the suburban streets that are not regularly visited by ravens, especially on the day of the week, where rubbish bins are put out for collection. Then, rich pickings are on promise, and the ravens are quick to spot any bin lid let ajar. It seems to me that the raven has often replaced the magpie in suburbia; suffice to say that we do not have magpies in my street any longer, since the ravens started to appear in numbers. Ravens are not colonial breeders, but live in pairs and defend a territory. They are mainly carnivorous and are capable of thriving in all but the harshest areas of Australia. This adult pair was photographed at a suburban Lake, where they busily foraged for insects in the swamp thickets. Bibra Lake; GPS. Status: Least Concern
