CommentThe Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo is also known as the Long-billed Black-Cockatoo; this is a male in breeding colours. In the years 2009 to 2017, each early spring, a flock of Baudin’s Black-Cockatoos visited my front garden to feed on the blossoming bottle brush tree there. Closely associated with the tall eucalypt forests of southern WA, the Baudin’s Black-cockatoo (Long-billed) might be living on borrowed time. Endemic to WA and restricted to the South-West, threats here include clearing of forest and the loss of habitat leaving fewer 100 year old nesting trees with suitable, vertical hollows. During breeding season this black-cockatoo feeds especially in marri trees, and as my area still has many of these trees around, we are blessed with the seasonal presence of these beautiful black-cockatoos, though they have not shown up in my garden for the last two years.
