CommentThe Grey-tailed Tattler is a medium sized shorebird with a 40 mm long, straight bill and yellow legs. Breeding in north-eastern Siberian taiga and tundra in riverbeds, each year it migrates south using the ‘East Asian-Australasian Flyway’. Flocks will reach Australia by September. Here they will stay to recover from preceding rigors until the end of April, only to show up again at their breeding grounds, while these are still snow-covered. Eighty Mile Beach WA is the major wintering destination for the species, but further south and in the East it’s not that common. It may, however be encountered along most of our coastline, frequenting also estuaries with tidal mudflats. The worldwide population put at 29.500 adult birds by 2016 (IUCN), the trend declining, it is a volatile species. Bamford et al. (2008) had 41.000 birds wintering in Australia, which highlights our nation’s importance as a seasonal host for some 90% of the population. Coodanup Foreshore; GPS. Status: Near Threatened
