CommentDouble-barred Finch
This was the very first image that suggested to me I might consider bird life photography as a hobby. I remember the moment I peeled open the LCD screen and viewed this image. I never realised how beautiful these little finches were until I caught this one in flight, perfectly backlit by the sunlight with underparts lit by the reflection. To see their little wings at full stretch become translucent in the light. Of course in real time they come and go in the blink of an eye but at 1/4000sec you get to see what the eye cannot. I also like the contrast between the soft green hue and the Finch as it passes through the sunlight. With an old Canon 600D I set manual focus to a spot just above the birdbath, hand held against a post and fired away when they arrived hoping for this outcome. To have planned, set up and captured a micro-sized bird in flight was extremely satisfying.
