CommentThere are a few reasons behind my decision to enter this photo. I was pleased to get both front and rear views as well as good eye contact with this pair of Star Finches (Adult male on the left and a juvenile on the right). I had set my portable hide up, allowing me to get quite close as these birds descended to the burnt branch, positioning themselves closer to a small waterhole beneath them. I was further pleased with the early morning light breaking through the clouds, which I think helps highlight the colours and patterns of these beautiful birds.
However, the main reason I entered this photo is the impact it has on me. Not long before I took this photo, a severe bushfire had swept through the area, leaving a very scorched environment (hence the burnt perch), yet these birds had survived the ordeal. Since then, further Bushfire Alerts have been issued for King River Road between Diggers Rest Station and 5 kilometres south of Wyndham, which is where this photo was taken. Given the severity of the 2020 bushfires across Australia, I can only hope that these Star Finches and a multitude of other birds have again survived further harsh ordeals.
