Taken on my first day with a Panasonic DMC-FZ300 which I really like, as I cannot manage anything heavier. The photos look much better in the camera than on my Windows 10 PC. I was reasonably close to these birds and expected the photo to be sharper. I have played around with post processing on Lightroom Classic at which I am a beginner. I am saving in Raw and would appreciate some help.

Glenn Pure	2020-07-14 10:37:37	Hard to be sure what's going on here. Did you crop very much? I notice from the EXIF information that the shutter speed was 1/100 sec. This won't help and may be the source or some or all of the softness as I suspect the birds were moving about a lot when this was taken as they appear to be fighting. A fast shutter speed is essential to get sharp shots of fast motion (at least 1/500 sec and preferably faster). This is reinforced by the fact that some of the foliage around the birds looks relatively sharp suggesting subject movement was the cause. When posting, it's a good idea to provide as much information as possible such as how much cropping was done, whether the light was poor or good, exposure settings (which I think Lightroom should display for you) and anything else that may be relevant.
Robin Spry	2020-07-14 17:03:44	Thanks Glenn. I cropped out 3/4 of the photo. It was an overcast day and I started on Manual setting but my photos were too dark so I changed to P. Should I persevere with Manual or would A or S be better. I understand shutter speed and aperture but find ISO confusing.
Glenn Pure	2020-07-15 12:33:44	Hi Robin, by all means persist with manual exposure if you can. However, if you want to use one of the auto settings, I personally prefer aperture priority. You will need to turn the ISO up so the shutter speed suits the amount of subject movement but not so high that it creates a lot of digital noise. The only way to find out is to experiment. Another option, if your camera supports it, is to set both aperture and shutter speed manually but set ISO to 'auto'. It's usually a good idea to limit how high the ISO will go as well as this is usually possible for cameras that support an auto ISO option. You will need to study your camera manual to check this out. Hope that helps.
Robin Spry	2020-07-16 07:53:22	Thanks again for those suggestions. I do have auto ISO and noticed the camera came with a limit set of ISO 200. I gather the lower the iso the better the resolution. I will do some experimenting with different settings.
Bob Young	2020-07-26 11:32:30	Hello Robin, Apologies for not responding sooner, but I have been involved in another project. Glen has given you some good advise to the problems in the image associated with the exposure etc, so I am not going to duplicate what he has said. Instead I want to focus on your comment "The photos look much better in the camera than on my Windows 10 PC." In order to display the image image on the LCD screen the camera's computer performs a .jpeg conversion using the settings which are set in the camera such as exposure, picture control, white balance, etc. When you import the image into Lightroom on your computer not all of these settings are included in the RAW file - you have to e.g set the white balance as part of your Lightroom post processing workflow. [At this point I have to admit to being a little bit naughty and used Snip & Sketch to copy a portion the image you uploaded into Lightroom on my computer. The purpose of the exercise was to try and replicate what I think your camera would have done to create the LCD image.] The adjustments that I made in Lightroom were: Develop mode: Basic Panel: Texture +40; Clarity +20; Vibrance +10 Detail Panel: Sharpening 100, Radius 0.7; Detail 25 If you open in Lightroom the .jpg image which you uploaded and make these adjustments, I think you will find that the image is now as good if not better than the LCD image.Certainly it will be much clearer and 'sharper' than the image you uploaded. For me to give you any more specific advice, I really need to see the original image which you imported into Lightroom and to know what adjustments you made and desirably what you were expecting to achieve with those adjustments. If you would like to send me a copy of the original RAW file along with details of the adjustment you made, I am happy to work with you to help you get better results from Lightroom. Regards Bob
