CommentThere is quite a large flock of Welcome Swallows doing their aerial gymnastics in and around the Royal Park Wetlands at this time. The initial spring breeding campaign was evidently very successful and now the youngsters are growing up all too fast, as they do. The problem for the overworked parent swallows is that their offspring are continuing to remain perched on convenient stalks, branches, or wires expecting their parents to continue arriving with juicy gnats, dragonflies, and mosquitoes instead of learning to fly and hunt for themselves. I watched as an adult arrived, most likely its parent, with no insect to share. The juvenile went into a tantrum, with much flapping of wings, and a fierce quarrel ensued, no doubt focused on the question of the youngster hunting for itself. As the photo illustrates, the juvenile is distinguished by its white gape and much smaller rufous patch on the forehead. It is about to learn the hard way that the age of entitlement is over.
