Darters need to keep their feathers dry and clean to remain buoyant when fishing in the water. Hence they have to come out of the water ever so often to dry up. I caught this male Australasian Darter in the process of drying its feathers, wings fanned out in typical fashion.

Technique: Camera rig support: Gitzo GT3543XLS Tripod, Dietmar Nill gimbal tripod head
Exposure Mode: MANUAL 1/80 sec at f8; Auto ISO-720. Metering Mode: Center-Weighted; Focus Mode: AF-C & AF Area-Mode: Dynamic, 9 points. VR: On
Nikon ViewNX-i for viewing and selecting files; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for cropping to 212%, resizing of file, selective sharpening and general post-processing inclusive of cloning away a twig below the right wing. Minor halos were manually removed in Photoshop and a Tif RAW file was created. Topaz Pro plug-in DeNoise was used for blanket sharpening and noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ was used for distribution confirmation and colour checks
