CommentOne of the benefits of working from home. I was at home to see this sparrowhawk butcher a house sparrow. It was raining the entire time I watched it- 5 minutes? The hawk spread its wings over the prey and would occasionally shake the water off its back. Identified as sparrowhawk by lack of the brooding eyebrows and square tail (not evident in this photo). Sparrowhawks nest nearby every year, and this is a regular perch - I've photographed sparrowhawks on this perch before.
