CommentImage specific: The widespread but generally uncommon Collared Sparrowhawk is a small, delicately built hawk that specializes in taking birds the size of a finch, which are mostly caught on the wing during daytime. However, mornings and evenings this raptor might hunt from a perch, seeking to ambush small birds at their roost, as seen here. The species is difficult to tell apart from the Brown Goshawk, but slender, yellow legs and a very long middle toe combined with a tail squared at the tip are among the best indicators; a paltry brow ridge is another tell-tale. Due to its very small size, I’m inclined to think this bird is a male. Time of capture 16:31. (This raptor’s species identity has been verified by BirdLife, thank you.)
