CommentI had seen these Australian Pied Oystercatchers near Little River the week before but they were too shy to allow me to come close. This time I was able to approach a little closer to take a portrait of one of them. Their bright orange beaks and matching scarlet eyes were as stunning as ever. John Gould notes that they are often found on beaches and sandbanks along with Curlews, Whimbrels, Stints and Sandpipers “whereon each receding tide leaves numerous molluscs and other marine animals which form a plentiful repast” for such waders (“Birds of Australia”, V.1). This was exactly where, when, and how I found these relatively uncommon shorebirds (only an estimated 1,500 individuals left in Victoria). It was on a mudflat near the outflow of the Little River, just as the tide was ebbing a few hours after high tide. They were in the company of a flock of tiny Red-Necked Stints and larger more angular Pied Stilts. I am pleased to report, John, wherever you are dwelling in bird heaven, that our Aussie Pied Oystercatchers were enjoying their “plentiful repast” as much as ever on this particular morning.
