CommentThis male White-fronted Chat, with his brilliant white face, swept-back black cap, matching black scarf round his neck and chest, and dapper grey jacket, was sighted perched on some Austral Seablite (Suaeda australis), a bushy succulent with narrow light green fleshy leaves that turn reddish in autumn. No doubt I interrupted whatever he was doing, and he has flown to where he can monitor what’s going on, perhaps waiting for this unwelcome intruder to make himself scarce. As John Gould notes in his mid-1880s observations of the bird: “it is a most sprightly and active little bird, particularly the male, whose white throat and banded chest render him much more conspicuous than the sombre-coloured female..It is rather shy in its disposition, and when disturbed flies off with considerable rapidity…before it alights again” (“Birds of Australia”, V.3). With all the Swamp Harriers doing the rounds in this vicinity, vigilance and alacrity are essential to survival, particularly on the part of small birds sporting such conspicuous plumage.
