CommentThe depicted Elegant Parrot, which I am quite certain is a male, is of the Western Australian subspecies N. elegans carteri.
This Elegant Parrot is not one I notice or see all that often, though it is far from unusual in my neck of the woods of WA. I know that it occurs in a number of localities near my Kelmscott home, and still I don’t see it often, when I go there. I put this down to its pale olive green and yellow colours, small size, puny call and generally unobtrusive behaviour and the fact that, when nesting, it does so high up in tree hollows. However, ever since I was a young man, I’ve known of a population of these little charmers near the border of Korung National Park in the Perth Hills, where from they fly out to feed in adjacent grassland paddocks in the mornings this time of the year. I aim to get a capture of them feeding on the ground this year, but they’re proving rather flighty, so until I succeed, I’ll submit this image of a perched bird. Time of capture 08:51.
