CommentDuring the COVID-19 lock-down I have been trying different techniques for capturing and processing images. One of the things I have tried is the new Canon Cloud Processing made available with the release of DPP version 4.12.10. Cloud processing is currently restricted to 1Dx III images with ISO > 3200. The only process currently available is 'high-performance noise reduction'. A RAW file is sent to the Canon Cloud Imaging service where the noise reduction computation takes place and then the image is returned to DPP as a 'CIP' file which can only be read by DPP. The CIP image can be converted and saved as a 16-bit TIFF for finishing in DPP or exported to Photoshop for finishing.

The DPP User Manual gives few details on the nature of the noise reduction so I can only speculate that it is computationally intensive requiring a powerful computer and it probably uses proprietary knowledge characterizing the sensor noise profile. The image shown here is my first attempt using the Canon Cloud service. I chose this image as it has a lot of red and blue parts which are the most difficult colours to process. This is because there is only one red and one blue pixel in the four-pixel sensel making up the unit cell of the Beyer colour filter array. These two colours are spatially under-sampled and have more noise than the green channel.

The resulting CIP image looks very good and was better than I was able to achieve with Neat Image noise reduction that I regard as the best available third-party noise reduction software. The image shown here is from a crop 3133 px wide downsized to 1800 px and output sharpened using PS 'remove Gaussian blur' (radius = 0.3 px, amount = 50). No selective area adjustments were used at any stage of the processing. I think the outcome of this first trial is very promising and I hope Canon Cloud processing is made available to more cameras.
