CommentI have always known that mistletoe seeds are spread from tree to tree by birds. I knew that the seeds were sticky and when passed from the gut, they would adhere to a tree trunk.
I never quite understood what a chore it is for the birds to pass those seeds.

I was watching a pair of female Satin Bowerbirds feeding on mistletoe in red box tree. This bird was looking quite distressed and only when I looked at the photograph later, could I see what was happening. For twenty minutes and more, it struggled to pass the seeds and then un-attach itself from the gelatinous, sticky fluid holding the seeds together.
