Comment | I was out seeking encounters with our visiting local community of Satin Flycatchers, when this other colourful summer migrant to Tasmania stopped nearby to say hello. No doubt on the ID in this case! The forehead band fully connecting the eyes, the strong yellow around the eye, and the deep blue colour in the wing, identify this as a male. These are related to the rare Orange-bellied Parrot, and while not as endangered have shown a substantial decrease in sightings in Tasmania over the last 17 years (source: Tasmanian Bird Report 39, Birdlife Tasmania 2018). They're often encountered here ground-feeding in small flocks in grasses, and it's less common to meet an apparently solitary individual like this one.
Equipment | Canon EOS 5D IV EF 100-400 L IS II + 1.4x III TC, at 560mm, centre spot servo AF, handheld Manual exposure, 1/1000 sec, f/9, ISO 500, spot metering Processing: Lightroom Classic CC for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop CC, where moderate noise reduction using Neat Image was applied to the bird+perch only, and stronger noise reduction applied to the background. The yellow background highlight in the top left was de-emphasised with a targeted luminosity mask. Final sharpening was applied to the bird+perch only, after size reduction to web submission dimensions. Currently I usually first try Canon DPP4 for initial RAW conversion as it can yield better detail, but in this case Lightroom seemed to do a better job of rendering the yellow tones around the bird's eye.
