CommentI noticed a female Spotted Pardelote repeatedly flying to the ground in my garden, and on closer inspection realised that it was landing on or next to the corpse of another Spotted Pardelote female, and repeatedly pecking at it (particularly the head) and occasionally dragging it a few centimetres across the mulch. It would spend a lot of time on the ground, then fly up into an adjacent low hanging branch, before flying back down to the corpse. Occasionally it would be chased away by one of the resident Red Wattle Birds, but would always return after a short while. It kept up this behaviour for much of the day. I can only speculate that the dead pardelote was killed in a territorial dispute with the other female, which continued to harry the the dead bird. Spp punctatus. There is a little motion blur due to slow shutter speed but still an interesting exhibit of behaviour.
