CommentBy far the most common prion species we see off Southern Australia is Fairy Prion. Slender-billed Prions look similar and are similar in size but make up less than 1% of sightings. They are also similar in appearance to Antarctic Prions that also visit our waters. The key ID points for Slender-billed Prion are shown in this image. The bill is narrower and finer than in any other prion sp. The broad white supercilium extending down to the lores is greater in width and extent than in other prion sp. The small black tip of the tail spanning T1-T3, which can be observed in this image, is also diagnostic of Slender-billed Prion. The distinct grey collar distinguishes it from Fairy Prion.
