CommentIt seemed to be my day for seeing Black-shouldered Kites everywhere at Werribee TP. This one was sighted hovering over grassland next to Paradise Road. I did not have my camera ready in time for an image of it hovering but, fortunately, I was able to catch it flying in my direction, beautiful rufous-streaked breast, brown eyes, and distinctive black shoulders all caught in the sun. The rusty colours and brown eyes suggest a juvenile. The beauty and nature of a Black-shouldered Kite has been perfectly portrayed by Judith Wright: “Carved out of strength, the furious kite/shoulders off the wind’s hate./The black mark that bars his white/is the pride and hunger of Cain./Perfect, precise, the angry calm/of his closed body, that snow-storm-/of his still eye that threatens harm,/Hunger and force his beauty made/and turned a bird to a knife-blade” (“Black-shouldered Kite”, “Birds: Poems by Judith Wright, National Library, 2010).
