CommentThis Brown Falcon was observed taking off beside Grills Road in the Werribee TP. Its buff belly mottling and creamy undertail suggest it might be a juvenile. John Gould observed that, while it has some of the actions and habits of Kestrels, such as hovering, it also soars like Harriers (“Birds of Australia”, v.1), obviously a jack of all raptor trades. He also notes that Brown Falcons are not only interested in the usual raptor fare, such as rodents and reptiles but also have quite a taste for caterpillars, so farmers should certainly not consider them a pest. The section of road where it was observed is where local farmers grow sweet corn every year, so perhaps this Brown Falcon is going to be an asset when it comes to keeping their next crop caterpillar-free.
