These articles present the results of member voting in previous competitions.  They include details of the competition theme and dates.

 

"Feeding Competition - Member Voting Results

The Feeding competition was held in November-December 2018.  For this competition, we asked you to submit photos of birds which are feeding either themselves or another bird, or with food/prey in their bill.  We will consider drinking to be a feeding action.

The results of member voting for the top 5 images in each category are listed here.  The Winner is the image which received the most votes; and we also show the next four highest placed images, rating them as Highly Commended if they received at least 90% of the votes for the winning image, and Commended for scores less than that.

This category attracted 66 entries, from 20 photographers. 24 members voted, with the following result:

"Birds in Arid Habitats" Competition - Member Voting Results

The Birds in Arid Habitats competition was held in September-October 2018.  The theme for this competition was simple: you may submit pictures of birds which are found in Australia's arid areas - and that's a lot of the country!  We're not going to attempt to closely define "arid habitat"; we'll be applying our own "pub test" to submissions.  But to help, we'll be using this map of Australian climate regions as a guide; the arid regions are those areas shown as Desert or Grassland - most of Australia!

The results of member voting for the top 5 images in each category are listed here.  In line with many other bird/wildlife photo competitions, we present the results in the following manner: the Winner is the image which received the most votes; and we also show the next four highest placed images, rating them as Highly Commended if they received at least 90% of the votes for the winning image, and Commended for scores less than that.

"Small is Splendid" Competition - Member Voting Results

The Small is Splendid competition was held in July-August 2018.  We asked you to submit pictures of birds whose largest size, given in most field guides, is 20cm or less.

The results of member voting for the top 5 images in each category are listed here.  In line with many other bird/wildlife photo competitions, we present the results in the following manner: the Winner is the image which received the most votes; and we also show the next four highest placed images, rating them as Highly Commended if they received at least 90% of the votes for the winning image, and Commended for scores less than that.

"Being Blue" Competition - Member Voting Results

The Being Blue competition was held in March-April 2018.  For this competition we asked you to submit pictures of birds which have the word "blue" in their species name (a fairly limited list) OR birds which have blue in their plumage or other features; this extends the list of available species considerably - parrots and kingfishers come immediately to mind, or even Pied Cormorants - so you should be able to find something suitable fairly easily.  We will NOT accept photos of Superb Fairy-wrens for this competition; they are the most common species in our galleries, and they were the subject of a special competition several years ago.

"On The Beach" Competition - Member Voting Results

The theme for the February 2018 competition was On the Beach.  We will accept pictures of birds on a beach – sand, pebbles, mud, or (stretching the definition of beach a little) rock shelf – or birds in/over water adjacent to a beach; we will also accept pictures of birds on beach structures (eg. piers, boat-ramps, etc). We will NOT accept photos of birds in trees (including mangroves) on/beside a beach, birds on cliff-sides, or birds on/over the open ocean (eg images taken during a pelagic trip).  Since Australia has an extensive coastline, there’s lots of beach, so plenty of opportunity for this competition; but Australia also has lots of inland, and so in order not to disadvantage members who don’t make it to the coast, we’ll also consider that “beach” applies to beach-like sections of riverbanks and lake shores (rivers and lakes must contain water – Lake Eyre in the dry season is not acceptable).
