| Comment | A group of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers landing in the dawn glow at the T-Section Lagoon, Werribee. The photo was taken just 15 minutes after sunrise. A magical time of day when everything is bathed in gold. It was high tide and the Sandpipers were moving from the now submerged coastal mudflats near the The Spit to nearby wetlands to either rest for several hours or continue foraging in shallow waters. Their pressing need now is to build up their reserves for their 13,000m flight back to their breeding grounds in the Siberian Arctic. Most will leave this month or next. Some are already beginning to show signs of acquiring their breeding plumage, such as the appearance of black chevrons on their breast and flanks. | ||||||||||||||||||
