| Comment | One that got away. When a darter spears a big fish it usually makes for the nearest perch where it can more securely deal deal with its prey. I have also noticed that younger darters, like this immature bird, are less skilled at executing the fish toss before swallowing. Consequently, the fish toss does not always go to plan and it may take several attempts or a large fish may even get away, as here. | ||||||||||||||||||
