| Comment | ‘Moderators Note: Photographers observations noted and not discounted; HANZAB records that sexes are indistinguishable by plumage’. • Sexing these little grebes by sight is difficult, but in 1987 CSRIO Publishing stated the following in Emu 87(3)150-157: ‘The male’s bill is visibly longer than that of the female’. • ABSA (www.absa.asn.au) Feb 2019 ref. HANZAB 1: ‘The male is slightly larger - max. weight ♂ 311 g, and max. weight ♀ 296 g’. Based on my own observations as well, I believe these two Hoary-headed Grebes to be a pair in breeding plumage in the process of some form of pair bonding. The male is to the upper right and the female to the lower left. The female’s abnormally pronounced rufous colour on the breast and neck I think may have been accentuated by humus in the water and plant material in her nest. Strangely, the male doesn’t show this, though both sexes incubate. The image was taken sitting on the bench inside the viewing platform's gazebo. I think this capture reveals the difference in the sexes well enough, but I don’t think the image can handle a larger crop yet to better illustrate this. | ||||||||||||||||||
